Stormy Night Publications: A Look Behind the Naughtiness Part 3

Hi Everyone!!

Today I am the very lucky lady to have the honor of interviewing, Stormy Night Publications very own, Jamie Miles! *woo crowd goes wild* Yes, yes, she's is an awesome editor to work with and I know that you'll want to hear what she has to say. So, let's get this interview started!

Hi Jamie! I'm so glad that you could come and visit me today. Let's start with an easy question. The authors I know who have published with SNP have nothing but good things to say about their experience. How does that make you feel?
So very proud! One of Stormy Night’s biggest goals is for authors to feel that our help is high-quality and that our help compliments and supports their hard work and ingenuity.

As a SNP author, I can tell you, all of your help is high-quality. I constantly do brag about you guys to other authors. On average, from start to finish, how long does it take to publish a book?
The editing process is different for each of our books, as authors submitting books are often at different levels of experience, so some books need a little more attention than others. But roughly, it takes about a month for us to do our part.  How long the whole process takes depends on how long the author takes to make revisions.

That makes sense. In your opinion, what is one of the biggest mistakes new authors make?
I think many new writers don't realize how important it is to get the title for a book just right.  With new authors especially, having a title which grabs the attention of readers can be the difference between great sales and mediocre sales.

I hate coming up with titles for my stories because you're so right! Finding the right title is very difficult! What's one grammar mistake that you would pay to never see again?
When the heroine is getting spanked on a bed, she lies down on the bed.  Not lays. Unless she lays herself down.

(Trying to think back if I made that mistake...I'm like 99.9% sure that I did,...Sorry! :-)) What is your favorite sub-genre to read from the books that are submitted?
I honestly love them all… but I might have a soft spot for medical play. When I was in high school, I read a romance series about a female doctor and her hot and very manly male nurse, and I fell in love with medical romance then and there.

I love medical play stories too. I cannot tell you how many stories come in to my head when one of my classmates is practicing her dental instrumentation on me and I just have to sit in the dental chair. Be ready, sometime within the next three years, one of my dental play stories will be crossing your desk to edit. ;-) Now, putting aside, your SNP duties, when you aren’t hard at work publishing books, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I spend an embarrassing amount of time on Netflix and Amazon Prime… but I swear that the shows that I watch are quality ones, such as Californication, Six Feet Under, The L Word, How I Met Your Mother, and Dexter. When I’m not parked on the couch, I’ve been Pinteresting and planning my upcoming wedding. So excited for that!

Haha, yes A+ shows right there. Congrats on the upcoming wedding! Now on to my favorite part of the interview…The five question game!

I recently went to the mall and saw that every store had their Christmas stuff out. It got me thinking about gifts that I had gotten in the past. What is the best and worst gift that you have ever gotten?

My favorite gift was a pair of tap dance shoes when I was eleven. My parents had us watch a lot of old movies, and I grew up wanting to be Shirley Temple.
Worst gift ever? Probably peanut brittle. Why would someone ruin peanuts like that?

This is probably bad to admit, but I've never seen any of Shirley Temple's movies. What’s your favorite color?
Sky blue.

What is one item that you cannot live without?
The internet and my phone. I know that’s two, but they’re kind of the same thing.

I'm with you on the internet, I use google daily. I’m a pretty big candy lover, what’s your favorite candy?
Anything with dark chocolate. Although I’m also very partial to Skittles and Sour Patch Kids.

Hmm...sour patch kids. I've never had them. :-) What is your biggest pet peeve?
Unmitigated rudeness and/or whining.

I'm also with you on not liking rude or whining people. Thank you so much for coming to stop by. It was a lot of fun!

The shirt below...so true. :-)

  1. I'm sure I will keep saying lay instead of lie. It's one I just never get. Also effect and affect. And commas. They will be the death of you... ;) Cute interview!!

    1. Haha Natasha! I'm the same way. I said a sentence each time changing between using the word lay and lie and it all sounded the same to me! Then again, I freely admit that I am horrible at grammar. :-)

  2. What a cool series about our favorite peeps! Shirley Temple is da bomb, baby. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is the best, but I like her in A Little Princess too. I'll have to find your wedding board on Pinterest, planning a wedding is so fun - have a great time with that Jamie!

    1. It was a really fun series to do Normandie. Maddie, Melody, and I were talking a couple of weeks ago and when we realized that they hadn't been interviewed recently, we wanted to all do it. :-)

  4. Thanks for the interview, Meredith! That t-shirt is super cute, and now I think I need it. It's going to go on my Christmas list for sure. :)
We must remedy you not having tried Sour Patch Kids. That's my favorite go-to candy at the movie theater! :)

    1. Jamie first off, I tried getting you that shirt for a Christmas present, but in order to get one we need 12 other people to buy it, so I couldn't get it. Secondly, I don't think my teeth could take the sugary sour taste. :-)

  5. Lie is to recline, lay is to place. So you lie down on a bed, but lay your cards on the table. However, the past tense of lie is lay, so that's where it gets confusing. But you know what? Keep making that mistake! It's those things that keep editors and proofreaders in business! :-D

    1. Haha! Don't worry, Erica. Even if I fixed this one mistake, I make about a hundred more. As I have told people, I gave up on grammar at around 4th grade, so my books are always filled with grammatical errors.

  7. I'll try not to let me unmitigated rudeness show when I say this but sour patch kids, UGH. Makes me shudder. One of my boys gave me a Cry Baby once, and I did. Cry that is, like a baby. I broke a tooth on peanut brittle once, so I'm there with you, Jamie, and offer my heartfelt apologies for the lay/lie issue. My M.Ed son corrects me all the time. Sorry, but I'm right brain. A big congrats on the pending nuptials, Jamie. What a fun interview!

    1. As a dental hygienist or soon to be one...I have to agree with you Maddie. I can just imagine what all that sugar does to one's teeth.

  8. Jamie, huge congratulations on your up coming wedding. And thank you for all your hard work when it comes to editing, you do a remarkable job.

Meredith I love the little cartoon with the dog. I tell my dogs to go lay down all the time. I can only imagine how many times I've made the same mistake in my stories. And you should really, really, Really watch a Shirley Temple movie. You'll find her adorable.
Erica, thanks for the reference on how to remember it. I made a post it note and stuck it on my desk.
Maddie, you just had to mention Cry Babies, didn't you. I instantly remembered the day my son came home with some. I asked what he had and he said gumballs. I asked for one, which he gladly gave me and then laughed his ass off at my reaction. Those things need to come with a warning for crying out loud.
Thanks so much Meredith, Maddie and Stormy Nights. This was a really fun 3 part interview. It's been a great way to learn more and connect better. ☺

    1. Thanks Mel! I laughed really hard when I found it. I thought that that grammar mistake wasn't that common, but it must be hard if it has a comic for it!
